Yamaha CD-X1 CD player working. Released 1983, this is the third CD player ever offered by Yamaha, representing absolutely uncompromising pursuit for sound and build quality. The fact that it lasts almost 40 years without any problem speaks for itself. I mean, CD player was invented in 1982, and the first Sony player, CD-110 has design problem (a control chip overheating). Even after repair, that one could not serve as a daily player. This Yamaha on the other hand, is entirely a different story. Equiped with an early but great! Burr brown pcm53 dac chip, this one presents liquid, analogue like sound that easily outperform some of the best CD players out there even by today's standard. I have listened to this one and a Denon DCD-1500AE (SACD, RRP1200 in its time) player side by side and this is the one I kept.

It sounds full bodied with adequate sound stage and wide range of dynamics, while 1500AE sounds dry and clinical in comparison. This one is unplugged from my study system and everything works as it should. Some scratches here and there, but generally great cosmetic condition for its age. The display sometimes miss the top bit, but slightly press the screen will do the trick. It is not equiped with a remote from new, and does not have any digital out, but who cares if you are using this as a desk setup?

This is perfectly suitable for someone who spend a lot of time at the desk and want to pursue a high quality sound experience with a desk/headphone setup, like I do. The retro look and the compact size make it a desktop legend. The sound from this 40 years player only needs to be heard to be believed.
